Layman‛s Guide to the IGS

The aircraft knows where it is at all times. It knows this because it knows where it isn’t. By subtracting where it is from where it isn’t, or where it isn’t from where it is (whichever is the greater), it obtains a difference, or deviation.
The Inertial Guidance System uses deviations to generate error signal commands which instruct the aircraft to move from a position where it is to a position where it isn’t, arriving at a position where it wasn’t, or now is. Consequently, the position where it is, is now the position where it wasn’t; thus, it follows logically that the position where it was is the position where it isn’t.

In the event that the position where the aircraft now is, is not the position where it wasn’t, the Inertial Guidance System has acquired a variation. Variations are caused by external factors, the discussions of which are beyond the scope of this report.

A variation is the difference between where the aircraft is and where the aircraft wasn’t. If the variation is considered to be a factor of significant magnitude, a correction may be applied by the use of the autopilot system. However, use of this correction requires that the aircraft now knows where it was because the variation has modified some of the information which the aircraft has, so it is sure where it isn’t.
Nevertheless, the aircraft is sure where it isn’t (within reason) and it knows where it was. It now subtracts where it should be from where it isn’t, where it ought to be from where it wasn’t (or vice versa) and integrates the difference with the product of where it shouldn’t be and where it was; thus obtaining the difference between its deviation and its variation, which is variable constant called “error”.

rFactor 2 – First public trailer

If you enjoyed the old MGM movie, Grand Prix, we’re sure you’ll enjoy this “movie style” promo video featuring rFactor 2 in work-in-progress beta testing stage.

Grand Prix racing in the 1960′s was a mixture of bravery that bordered on recklessness and, contrary to what many may say, innovative design and technology, far from primitive, which led Formula One to where it is today.

It was an era when the human eye, instead of a computer and a wind tunnel, designed a beautiful car. It was an era where spectators and drivers were only protected by bales of hay, which were often more likely to attribute to a fire than to save you in an impact.

Risks were taken and lives were lost, but the romance of the era still remains been the target of software developers, TV documentaries, and Hollywood movies. Many, including those of us at ISI, consider this space in time to be a golden age in the history of motorsport.

The first in-game/sim screenshot of rFactor 2 released to the public was of a road lined with trees, a house on the right and a truck parked in its driveway. This, barely recognizable to us as the same track now, was the first indication that ISI were trying to do something different.

We have licensed content from the modern era of motorsport for multiple types of racing, but also have licensing deals for real content from the first four decades of Formula One (some in the initial release, some to come later). We’ve done this because this is what we love and this is what we want to bring to the racing game/sim community. We want you to be challenged by our software, to be challenged rain or shine, day or night, old or new, and what better track to challenge you than the streets of Monte-Carlo?

É dia de feijoada!

Hoje é dia de feijoada. Diferentemente dos bares e restaurantes populares, em que dia de feijoada é quarta-feira e sábado (pelo menos em São Paulo), no bandeco, dia de feijoada é sexta-feira. Mas não toda sexta-feira (tá pensando o quê, cara pálida!). Em verdade, temos o referido prato apenas uma ou duas vezes por semestre (às vezes, zero vezes por semestre). E por que sexta-feira? Porque o campus está bem mais vazio do que de costume, pois muitas pessoas voltam para suas cidades de origem.

É sempre uma ocasião especial. Quem já viu, sabe. Nem vendem entradas para não-estudantes. As pessoas trazem suas melhores farinhas, farofas, Coca-Cola e o que mais acharem de interessante para “embelezar” seus almoços (e jantas). Aliás, dia de feijoada é um dos únicos dias em que a janta é igual ao almoço. As pessoas ficam mais inspiradas, muitos dos que não costumam frequentar o bandeco vão lá neste dia, e vão aos montes. As filas duplicam, triplicam. Tudo isso por causa de uma iguaria criada por escravos. Interessante, não?

Mas nem tudo é conto de fadas. Há algumas semanas, o cardápio programado era (adivinha!) feijoada. Eu, como um mero mortal comum, dirigi-me ao estimado bandeco e eis que me deparei com algo: não havia feijoada! De fato, não havia almoço algum! Vi as pessoas desoladas, perdidas, sem saberem o que seria de suas vidas, temerosas quanto ao futuro incerto. Internamente, pânico geral; externamente, uma expressão de dúvida inexprimível. Elas se entreolhavam, atônitas… decepção.
Horas depois, descobri o que ocorrera: a máquina de lavar as bandejas havia quebrado e os funcionários não dariam conta de lavá-las manualmente, ainda mais num dia de feijoada. Quando fiquei sabendo disso, a frustração que sentira outrora cedeu espaço para simpatia pela causa dos pobres trabalhadores. O DCE (você acha que eles ficariam de fora dessa!) organizou cartazes e manifestações em prol dos funcionários (e contra o REItor (pra variar)). De fato, o bandeco é um baita instrumento alimento-político. Experimente deixá-lo fechado por alguns dias pra ver no que dá!

Mas os acontecimentos excepcionais não pararam por aí. Depois de alguns dias funcionando “mais ou menos”, adentrei o referido recinto sem saber o que me esperava. Estupefato, fiquei sem ar por alguns milissegundos, olhos esbugalhados. Esfreguei-os para me certificar de que não dormia. Não, não era sonho. Os outros frequentadores, que também aguardavam na fila, comentavam, olhavam novamente para conferir. Burburinho. O destino que nos aguardava estava ali, bem ali na frente. E quando fomos pegar nossa bandeja… pratos! Pratos de porcelana no bandejão! BANDEJão! Sim, sem dúvida, foi um momento difícil de crise de identidade para meu restaurante preferido.
Por mais que pareça bom ter pratos lá, acredite em mim: não era! A logística do bandeco não foi concebida com pratos em mente. Era um deus-nos-acuda para segurar o prato, a sobremesa e ainda [tentar] pegar os talheres e o guardanapo. Algumas pessoas que nunca vão no bandeco foram lá só por causa dos pratos (vide comentários).
Mas isso foi apenas mais um capítulo na história desse gigante patrimônio dos universitários (e por que não da humanidade!). Algumas semanas após o incrível ocorrido, as boas e velhas bandejas novamente deram as caras (para a felicidade dos que não estavam a se alimentar direito – como eu).
E duas semanas após o retorno das operações ordinárias, o prato constante no título deste artigo também deu as caras (dessa vez, para a felicidade geral da nação!). Hoje é dia de feijoada! Então, com sua licença, vou garantir minha segunda porção dela na janta…

Today, 15 January 2011, Wikipedia has completed exact 10 years of existence. This free online encyclopaedia is a great revolution on the Internet and it is one of the most viewed websites in the world.

Wikipedia lets the reader be more than a reader, becoming a writer and contributing to one of the best knowledge database ever! One feature that no printed encyclopaedia can offer. Besides, where else one could find an article about, e.g., Geoff Crammond? Or Chocobo? Or Crashgate? Or Serial ATA? Well, you got the point.
Beside this success, there are thousands and thousands of people, just like you, contributing to build an outstanding and reliable database about much more things than one can ever know in his lifetime. According to Wikipedia, “there are more than 91 000 active contributors working on more than 17 000 000 articles in more than 270 languages”. Impressive, huh?

Beakman de volta às telinhas

Fato! Um dos meus programas de TV favoritos está de volta às telinhas: O Mundo de Beakman.
Nos meus tempos de criança, eu era audiência absolutamente assídua e fiel ao programa. Inclusive, um grande amigo meu me troçava por causa do meu cabelo que, segundo ele, era parecido com o do principal personagem da série: o Beakman.

Bem, a série tem como meta apresentar a Ciência (em termos gerais, Física, Química e Biologia) de uma forma atraente e cativante, o que é muito interessante, pois, deste modo, é possível alcançar um público bastante amplo e despertar o interesse de muitas pessoas para o assunto. O programa é permeado por experiências científicas e também por muito humor (embora este último aspecto se perca um pouco às vezes na nossa versão dublada). Além de Beakman, há uma assistente (que foi mudando com o passar do tempo, na seguinte ordem: Josie, Liza e Phoebe) e um “rato de laboratório” do tamanho de uma pessoa (cujo nome é Lester).

O programa, apesar de ser voltado ao público infanto-juvenil, pode ser muito bem desfrutado por pessoas de todas as idades (eu mesmo estou assistindo todos os dias). As transmissões ocorrem de segundas a sextas, às 19h15min, dentro do bloco Sessão da Hora, na TV Cultura. Altamente recomendado.
